Getting back to Lincoln can be summed up in one word: hell. We picked the worst day to come back; there were horrible snow storms/blizzards all over the Midwest. My mom drove me to the airport yesterday morning after we got dumped on the night before. There were a bunch of cars on the shoulder and in ditches because they all had spun off the road or had problems similar to that.
My first flight, from Detroit to Chicago, was delayed two hours. The weather in Detroit had come to a lull, but Chicago was in the midst of a storm. Unfortunately, our layover was also two hours long, so when we got to O'Hare, our plane pulled up to the gate as our next flight was supposedly done boarding. Because O'Hare is the worst designed airport and because our next flight was a different carrier (we booked through Travelocity), it took us nearly 20 minutes to get to the other side of the airport. Luckily our next flight was running 45 minutes late and hadn't started boarding!
It doesn't stop there. Our Chicago to Omaha flight kept getting pushed back further and further. We boarded our 2:50pm flight around 7pm and didn't leave until 8:45pm since the plane had to be de-iced and had to go through all of these safety checks.
We landed in Omaha around 10pm (instead of 4:28pm) and we found out that Omaha was the hardest hit city with 14 inches of snow! The highway wasn't cleared for our hour-long drive back to Lincoln, so we called several hotels in the area and found one that had a 24-hour shuttle, and an available, affordable non-smoking room.
This morning, we took the shuttle back to the airport, and then took the parking lot shuttle to our car. My car was iced over and had a ton of snow on it, so it took us about 20 minutes to dig ourselves out. And our hour long drive ran about an 1 1/2 because of the snow and ice on the roads.
To make a long story short (too late, eh?), what was supposed to take 4 hours to get back, took about a day and a half. Apparently someone did not want us back in Lincoln.
