Hurricane Katrina is documented as being one of the worst natural disasters on American soil. It's hard not to see this when virtually every channel is showing the aftermath of the devesatating storm. Mona and Sujith are still in Baton Rouge since the Interstate 10 (basically the only way to get into New Orleans) is underwater. Their house and car are underwater and I am sure they've lost their posessions, (including wedding memories),which are irreplacable. And the residents of New Orleans still in the city are literally dying to get out.
I have talked to a lot of people that are enraged about those who didn't flee the city and put themselves and their children in danger despite the many warnings and mandatory evacuations. I can't believe they think it's that easy to get up and leave. New Orleans is home to a huge amount of poor and helpless people that don't have the means to leave or even take shelter in the designated shelter areas. The elderly, the handicapped, the hospital patients, and the families without any sort of transportation were not given public transportation to get themselves where they needed to be. And now they are suffering and dying from exhaustion, dehydration, and cholera (from the sewage water).
A friend told me that Congress got together last night, LAST NIGHT? 4 days after the hurricane? It took less than one night to have Congress get together over the stupid Terry Shiavo case that frankly was no one's business. Government should have met a while ago and prevented the deaths that were caused by not having adequate supplies and shelter.
On a more positive note, I heard corporations have donated $93 million dollars in the last four days for hurricane victims. And Mona has gotten so many calls from family and friends hoping she and Sujith are okay. We really appreciate everyone worrying about their safety, and helping them out.
